What is locum tenens?

Locum tenens in Latin literally means "place holder." In the health profession, it's used to denote temporary work done as an independent contractor. Hospitals and clinics around the world use locum tenens providers to cover for permanent staff who are taking time off or to fill a need before a permanent provider is found.

Locum Life is a testament to the locum lifestyle that every provider should enjoy. Physician owned and operated, we bring a personal view of the locum tenens experience.

Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (for physicians)

The IMLC applies to physicians (MD/DO) only. NPs, PAs, CRNAs, dentists and other professions are licensed separately in each state.

The IMLC is an agreement among participating states and territories and their medical and osteopathic boards. Under this agreement, licensed physicians can qualify to practice medicine across state lines within the Compact if they meet the agreed-upon eligibility requirements.

According to the IMLCC, the Compact is active in 41 states plus the District of Columbia and Guam. Three more states (Alaska, New Mexico and Rhode Island) have passed the Compact and are still implementing it. Source: IMLCC participating-states map (opens in new tab) (checked October 28, 2026).
